Favourite Meal

Lasagna, it’s always going to be lasagna! I love Italian food. If someone can cook lasagna they are always welcome to come over to my place or I’ll go to their's

Favourite aspect of Calgary

It seems like the key place to be. We have amazing views of the downtown landscape and mountains all in one spot.

Perfect Weekend

Relax with a nice bath, drop a bath bomb from LUSH, have the bathroom lit by candle light and watch some classic Disney movies!

I grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan for most of my life. Prior to that I lived in Mattagami, Ontario when I was very little.

Fun Fact

I will eat as much cheesecake as humanly possible knowing that it won’t be very fun for my stomach for the rest of the day!

Happiest Place

I’d say I’m happiest when I have quiet moments to myself, whether that’s having a warm bath, meditating, or doing yoga.

What is your name and pronouns?

Dawson Thomas, he/him/they

What is your job position?

Saitsa Vice President

How long have you been at Saitsa?

2022 is my third year with Saitsa on the Board of Directors.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

At first it was the experience of the leadership opportunities and just getting involved in the school, but as my passion grew for the student movement my passion changed to giving students a voice and having the chance to provide Indigenous representation and have a platform. Seeing how much we can do for students and giving them a voice, and just simply being there for them really motivated me and changed the game for me.

What is your education and work background?

Prior to SAIT, I spent one year at Mount Royal University for general education. Then I took a year off of school and worked that year. Then I started at SAIT in the Hospitality and Tourism Management program!

In terms of work experience, I’ve been in the food industry for five years now and also have experience in customer service. I've gained a lot of people skills from my past work!

Why did you choose to work for Saitsa?

When I started at SAIT, myself and all students had to start learning online. It was a bummer. I thought to myself how I can make the most out of my experience and get involved even with everything being online. I decided to start a club which is the Pride club that started this year!

I got an email from Saitsa one day and I was asked about my interest in leadership opportunities and learned about the Board of Directors (BOD). Joining the BOD sounded like a great opportunity to me! I became a candidate and started campaigning online. It was so weird and strange at the time, but I was elected and didn’t know what to expect moving forward but embraced it!

What advice do you have for new SAIT students?

Take part in all of the opportunities you have available to you. Even though SAIT programs are typically short, either two years or less, it’s still your college experience and who knows if it’ll be your first and only time in college to experience being a post-secondary student! Make your time here one to remember. Also, you don’t know what you like until you try it! Try a club. Start a club. Volunteer. Become a leader. Be a part of the community.

Why should students get to know Saitsa?

We are here to be students’ voices and be a platform for them. We truly want to advocate for students and make sure that they have the best experience possible. We are a great support system and we are built for students.
