We know everybody is busy with end of year activities but this is just a quick reminder to submit your SA/SU promotional and marketing items for the SWAGMEISTER contest. The original deadline for this contest is April 18, 2008. We are now extending the deadline to May 2, 2008. The folks at the ACUI conference have had great success with this kind of competition and we feel that it is a great opportunity to show off our creativity and share ideas with each other. This is the first time AMICCUS-C has held this competition. Your participation is greatly appreciated to get this ball rolling for the years to come.

Keynote Spotlight

One hockey player, one ex-drummer, one police officer and a barber shop; basic ingredients that went together to help form the Tim Hortons chain. Tim Horton and his co-founder, Ron Joyce, started in May of 1964 what has become the largest Franchised organization in Canada today.

Why Tim Hortons has become part of the Canadian culture is a fascinating true story. Costs of real estate, competition and the unique quality of the coffee and donut business, are all factors in why Hortons become a keystone in our Canadian culture.

It was not all sunshine and roses. There was a time not so many years ago when the lack of funds made national advertising very difficult to achieve. Yet, necessity proved to be the mother of invention since the lack of financial support was one of the key factors in the invention of the contest, Roll Up the Rim To Win.

Today, Tim Hortons is part of every major city and town in Canada and growing strongly in the United States. How the development of the core product came about makes the Hortons story a fascinating experience.

This is only a smattering of the facts and history of Tim Hortons that will be part of my talk. You may be surprised at how many facts can be applied to your own careers today. Come see and hear about a Canadian success story that includes over 60,000 people from coast to coast. I promise you an exciting presentation!

April 9 Update

Room Bookings
We have received word that the room block is now full at the Chateau. The hotel had originally guaranteed us the conference rates for 100 rooms each night and at this point we have 120 rooms booked nightly. They have graciously allowed this overage but are not offering the reduced rates over and above 120 rooms.

Therefore we need to ask anyone who has rooms booked to please phone the hotel and release rooms if you are not going to use them. This will open up rooms in our current block for delegates to use. On the flipside, the hotel encourages you to call and check periodically if you require a room and have not booked.

While this is exciting news it is also going to present some issues for anyone who has not booked so we are in the process of negotiating with a hotel next door (5-10 min walk) from the Chateau. The hotel is Deer Lodge and their basic rates are approximately $130. We will know tomorrow if they will further discount their rates so please wait if you would like to exercise this option. The website is http://www.crmr.com/deer-lodge.php

Room Rates
In discussions with the Chateau they are guaranteeing the $150 rate (plus service charges) on the Fairmont rooms only. There have been a number of changes in staff during the organization of the conference so there have been a few challenges in dealing with new employees of the hotel. We were under the impression that the rooms would all be $150 regardless but had this clarified by the Hotel Manager that only the basic rooms will be assessed that rate and those rooms were given out on a first come, first served basis. Therefore the rates below are the discounted rates (and they are severely discounted). So if you have been told by the operator that you are going to be placed in a "Lakeside Room" because that is all they have left... then you need to pay the Lakeside rates. My apologies if this causes any confusion but this is their head office policy and they are not willing to adjust it.

That being said they will do everything they can to shift people around but the hotel is at capacity and they can only do so much. As mentioned before every effort will be made to keep you in the same room as it is in their best interest to do so. Another option to reduce your costs will be to look at staying in the Deer Park Lodge. It is a lovely hotel and is within walking distance. Please stay tuned for more information on further reduced rates.
